What are Underground Copper, Galvanized, and Kitec pipes?

These pipes are now known to have several issues that make them unsuitable for use in modern plumbing systems. At Advanced Repipe Specialist, we provide essential plumbing solutions for homeowners, and businesses. Our focus is to replace Galvanized/Underground Copper/Kitec piping with safe, efficient, top quality, and compliant material such as PEX-A or Copper Type L.

Galvanized:

Galvanized pipe was used to construct indoor plumbing for homes through the 1900s to 1970s. You’ll know the pipes are nearing the end of their lifespan and it’s time to replace them when the water pressure lowers. As pipes age, plaque builds up on the inside of the pipe, claiming significant surface area and restricting water flow. You may also experience uneven distribution of water as corrosion can build up sporadically. Corrosion also further results in the discoloration of the water due to increased iron and flakes of the corrosion breaking off into the water stream. Brown stains in sinks and tubs are a common side effect.

Underground Copper:

Underground Copper used to be installed years ago approx during the 1970s to the late 1990s in new construction builds. These pipes were usually installed under the concrete slab with Copper Type M. If Copper piping is installed this way, it causes the joists to touch the concrete and result in slab foundation leaks.

Kitec Pipe:

Kitec plumbing is a polymer pipe, typically installed in homes between the years of the 1990s and early 2000s. These pipes are prone to prematurely fail, and spontaneously burst which is why they have been recalled. Kitec pipes are more likely to crack at any minute and cause major damage to your home. A major leak of this sort can not only cause serious damage to homes, but can also result in mold, mildew, and extremely high repair costs.

The risks of Underground Copper, Galvanized, and Kitec Pipes

  • Leaks and water damage: Galvanized and Kitec pipes are prone to leaks and failures due to corrosion and premature wear. These leaks can cause significant water damage to a property and can be expensive to repair.

  • Health risks: Galvanized pipes can release lead and other harmful metals into the water supply, posing a health risk to those who consume the water.

  • Reduced water pressure: As Galvanized and Kitec pipes corrode and deteriorate, they can restrict water flow and reduce water pressure, making it difficult to perform routine tasks such as showering or washing dishes.

The Pipe Replacement Process

  • Inspection: A professional plumber will inspect the plumbing system to determine the extent of the damage and the type of pipes that need to be replaced.

  • Preparation: The affected area is prepared for the replacement, which may involve excavation and removal of old pipes.

  • Replacement: The old Galvanized or Kitec pipes are replaced with new, modern, and safe materials.

  • Testing: The new plumbing system is tested to ensure that it is functioning correctly and safely.

  • Cleanup: Any excavation or cleanup work is performed, and the affected area is restored to its original condition.
